JMAxVOTM Ghanian COVID Relief Project for 100+ Deaf and Blind Students and Orphans

In the time of the COVID pandemic, rural regions in developing countries have been the hardest hit, with poorer access to medical care — resulting in a significantly higher mortality rate for those infected with the virus. To exacerbate this, these same regions are often under-resourced, lacking supplies like hand sanitizer, masks, and toiletries — all of which are essential in mitigating transmission of the virus and curbing COVID morbidity rates.

JMA has been working with Voices on the Mount, a Ghanian nonprofit youth activist organization started by Obed Dadzie. JMA has financially contributed to cover costs for materials (toiletries, masks, hand sanitizers, and other personal protective equipment) and has worked with VOTM’s extensive youth activist group to purchase and distribute these supplies to under-resourced communities in Ghana.

Volunteers help unload supplies.

All resources purchased went to over 100 students across Egyam Children’s Home, an orphanage supporting over 80 children, and the Sekondi School For the Deaf and Blind, an educational facility supporting children with disabilities.

We’re incredibly excited to see the amazing results of the first wave of this project, and plan to help more communities in need through our second wave next month!

Local, Sustainable Model

We acknowledge that most models of western aid perpetuate cycles of dependancy on external sources, while ultimately taking away from the very communities they intended to serve. We work with VOTM, a Ghanian nonprofit with a student activist network, purchasing supplies from local stores in Ghana
