Berkshire, England— Eton College established a new JMA chapter under JMA’s BioReach Program, in which the fundamentals of medical biology are taught to motivated elementary school students. The Eton College Chapter has been conducting Biology Outreach Sessions at Holyport Elementary School and was featured in Eton College’s newsletter.
Teams also learnt about how gases pass through the lungs into the blood and the all important link be- tween the gases they breathe and those that plants release. Next session, they will return to the Tony Little Centre and make great use of the many surfaces de- signed for students to write directly on, including the Walls to maximize learning and retention.
This JMA chapter is employing a unique model of teaching through student choice, where student interest dictates their lessons on medical anatomical sections! Students chose from the following systems for their third session:
- Circulatory System
- Cell Structure
- Digestive System
We’re excited to see how the Eton College chapter commences with their unique student interest driven learning model!
Year 7’s built a model lung from a water bottle, a balloon, a straw, and a plastic bag. Team Genetic Modification (pictured) won the organ system competition by managing to build a working lung in under 10 minutes, though managed to use over half of the provided blue tac, leaving the other teams at a slight disadvantage.
